Grandson Isaac has been our greatest fan and most ardent supporter ever since Carolyn told him when he was 4 that we hoped to buy a boat… “A boat?? What kind, Grandma?? How big? Will it have a bed?? What about food?? His questions have been endless, even after he convinced his Mom to bookmark the Selene website and he spent hours reviewing all the different models… and sizes. He was somewhat disappointed when he heard we purchased a Selene 36 and not the Selene 62 which was his clear choice!

Given his constant encouragement, it was only fitting that Isaac be the first visitor and guest aboard Sojourner. And so, with Grandma and Soonan providing roundtrip car service between Green Turtle Bay and Chicago, Isaac became Sojourner’s first, First Mate in late September, 2008, just prior to his 6th birthday.
Isaac was at once struck by the human scale of the boat, “just my size” he told his Grandma politely after noting it isn’t a Selene 62, and overwhelmed by the bigness of the water through which the “little” boat carried him. Still, it was clear that he is his Grandma’s grandson: he took to being on the water immediately and removed off his PFD only reluctantly when it was time for bed. He also seemed to be a natural at boating: he provided directions to the captain every time we departed and returned to the slip; he was fascinated by the anchoring process and was certain he could operate the windlass; he steered (with some slight assistance from the auto pilot); he enjoyed the fly bridge amenities; he assisted with the daily engine check. He caught(and threw back) his first ever fish, and he even told sea ghost stories while eating ice cream on the aft deck after dark one evening!

The boat –and boating life– were still quite new to us when Isaac came to visit, and we learned much by viewing both through his eyes. Check out, for example, the pictures he took of the boat to share with his family and friends back home…
